Does your house seem to develop a strange smell every time your air conditioner turns on? This can be a nasty problem, and it’s definitely not something that you want to ignore. For these reasons, we’ll be talking about why your air conditioner might start to stink, and what can be done to fix those appalling odors.

Possible reasons why your air conditioner smells bad:

1. It’s too big for your home:

Everyone knows that an air conditioner is used to cool your home, but many people don’t realize that it also performs a second function: dehumidification. While removing heat from your home’s air, your unit removes a bit of moisture from the air as well. If your air conditioner is too big for your home, it will go through a quick cooling cycle, called short cycling, and won’t run long enough to adequately dehumidify your home. On especially humid days, mold and mildew can grow on some components of your unit and distribute a “dirty sock” type smell around your home.

2. Condensate drain is clogged up.

If your air conditioner’s condensate drain is clogged, water will build up in the drain pan. This moisture can be a breeding ground for mold and mildew, which (as above) gives off a musty smell that will carry up through your ductwork and travel throughout your home.

3. Cooling coils are dirty.

Your air conditioner blows air directly over its cooling coils. Thus, if your coils are dirty, or if bacteria and other microorganisms have grown on them, your air can pick up strange smells from the coils themselves.

4. Problems with your air filtration system.

Your air filtration system removes contaminants from your home’s air. Whole house air cleaners and ultraviolet lights are especially good for removing contaminants that can produce odors in your home. If something is wrong with your AC unit’s air filtration system, those contaminants will not be properly removed and your home’s air can begin to smell.
