Spoke with the client regarding the TXV restriction at the outdoor metering device located at the condenser. Explained that the system is equipped with two TXVs because, in a heat pump, the refrigerant flow reverses between heating and cooling modes. Each coil (indoor and outdoor) becomes either the evaporator or the condenser depending on the mode, so each coil requires its own dedicated TXV to properly meter refrigerant in both directions. After the initial repair — replacing the indoor TXV and installing a filter drier that was previously missing — the system now operates within manufacturer specifications in cooling mode. However, when the system is switched to heating mode, a restriction is present at the outdoor TXV. Frost buildup is visible at the outdoor valve, and refrigerant pressures confirm a metering restriction when the unit is operating in heat.

Performed annual heating maintenance on the 2020 Trane XR 3.5-ton heat pump. Replaced two 12x24 filters located in the lower wall registers by the upflow FAU in the hallway and cleared the condensate line. Left a box of 12x24 filters behind for the tenant. Client reported that since the previous repair, the system will heat for a short period and then begin blowing cold air. During the prior visit, the TXV at the evaporator coil was replaced and a filter drier was installed, as one had not been present. Today, the system was cycled in heating, refrigerant levels were checked, and a restriction was found. Further evaluation confirmed the restriction at the internal expansion valve (TXV) located at the condenser, with visible frost buildup. The system was also cycled in cooling, and refrigerant levels were within range with a 20° temperature split. The previous technician diagnosed the equipment in cooling and found a restriction at the evaporator-coil TXV, as well as noted the absence
