Demand call: no cool Upon arrival, client stated warm air was coming from supply vents and breaker had tripped for outdoor unit. Diagnostics revealed the hermetic capacitor was zero. Disconnect box was extremely tight and recommended replacement. In the process of replacing disconnect box, the pull mechanism was completely destroyed. Burnt wires and melted plastic was exposed in the box. Ohmed compressor motor windings and tested to ground to see if compressor motor was internally grounded. Pulled the plug from the compressor and tested to see if terminals were grounded. Also tested condenser fan to see if the fan was grounded. Once everything was assembled, I isolated the fan motor and the breaker did not trip. Then I tested the fan motor and compressor motor together and the breaker did not trip. Synopsis: breaker most likely tripped due to high amperage from failed capacitor and burnt wires at disconnect box. Replacing disconnect box and capacitor was the right diagnostic. Client

From the thermostat, demanded a call for cooling. Blower motor initiated moving air. Connector fan/compressor motor was not moving. After a few short moments, compressor and condenser fan was operational. Checked refrigerant temperature and pressure with gauges. Checked compressor amp draw and noticed amperage was increasing beyond RLA. Compressor sounded terrible like it was on the verge of failing. Pulled disconnect to save compressor and disconnect fell apart. Compressor motor does not work and uses R-22 refrigerant. R-22 compressors are no longer available. I would suspect the Schrader valve to be faulty, leaking refrigerant from the port, so I took the liberty of replacing the Schrader valve with a new one. Charged system with 2 pounds of refrigerant to restore proper subcool temperatures. Checked running/starting capacitors and electrical motors. Washed air filter. Confirmed TXV metering device. Power shut off was through the service panel. Installed Jones valve and cleared primary condensate drain line. Cleaned air handler platform.
