Question 1

Why is my AC unit suddenly not cooling?

Accepted Answer

If your Coachella Valley area AC unit is running non-stop but still failing to cool your home, the most ommon culprits include dirty air filters, refrigerant leaks, or issues with the compressor.

Question 2

How do I fix an air conditioner that is not cooling?

Accepted Answer

To fix your air conditioner that is not cooling, you can try resetting your thermostat to the correct setting of AUTO, instead of ON. If you reset your thermostat and your air conditioner is still not working, you should replace your air conditioner’s air filter. If neither of these solutions work, your air conditioner may need a repair that requires more advanced HVAC knowledge.

Question 3

Can a dirty air filter cause my air conditioner not to cool?

Accepted Answer

Yes, a dirty air filter can cause your air conditioner not to cool effectively especially here in the Coachella Valley. When the airflow is restricted within your unit, your AC system has to work harder to cool the air, which can cause it to strain and ultimately malfunction. In some cases, it may even freeze up, causing it to stop working altogether.

Question 4

What are the symptoms of bad indoor air quality in my Coachella Valley area home?

Accepted Answer

The well-being of a building’s inhabitants is a good indicator of air quality. Keep a close eye on the onset of symptoms including congestion, sneezing, coughing, watery eyes, headaches and regular nosebleeds if you or a member of your family suffers from them regularly.

Your house, like your body, could be sending you signals that something isn’t quite right. What proof do you have in your home that bad indoor air quality exists? Here are a few things to look for:

Dust buildup on vents and on household surfaces.
Mold and mildew in the house.
Foul odors in the house.
Inconsistent air distribution.

Question 5

How can I fix bad indoor air quality in my Coachella Valley area home?

Accepted Answer

There are several things you can do to change the air quality in your home for the better, right away!

Change your AC filter regularly.
Change all filters in household appliances on a regular basis (vacuum cleaners, humidifiers, etc.)
Use your stove’s ventilation system each time you cook.
Keep floors clean with regular vacuuming, sweeping and mopping.
Control the level of humidity in your home.

Question 6

How does an air scrubber or air purification system help clean my indoor air near Coachella Valley?

Accepted Answer

An air scrubber, like most filtration devices, uses purification filters to help extract pollutants from the air as it circulates through the system. The scrubber removes dirty air from the room several times an hour while still pumping in new, chemical-free air.

Air purifiers simply clean the air, which can include pollutants, allergens and toxins.

Question 7

Why does my house get so dusty?

Accepted Answer

Dust in the home can be caused by dirt from shoes and pet paws, as well as particles in the air that settle into carpet fibers. Vacuuming on a regular basis can help, as well as using microfiber dusting cloths that capture dust rather than disperse it back into the air.

Gaps around windows and doors can also allow outside dust and pollen to enter the house whenever the wind blows. Living near a dirt or gravel road might exacerbate the problem. To minimize dust from drifting in, fill in cracks around windows with caulk and replace outdated weather-stripping around doors.

Question 8

Should I be concerned about indoor air quality?

Accepted Answer

In a word, yes. Like most of us you think of your home as a safe haven, but it may not be. Hazardous pollutants can be found in indoor air; in some cases, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, levels can be up to 70 times greater than those in outdoor air.

Indoor pollutants pose immediate problems for people with respiratory illnesses like allergies and asthma, and there is a consensus that prolonged exposure can negatively affect anyone’s health. Contact Hydes for solutions to your indoor air quality solutions.

Question 9

What is the R-value, and why is it important for attic insulation?

Accepted Answer

The R-value measures an insulation material's resistance to heat flow, indicating its thermal performance. Higher R-values signify better insulating effectiveness. For attic insulation, a high R-value is crucial as it helps maintain consistent indoor temperatures, reducing energy costs and enhancing comfort. Proper R-value ensures the attic stays insulated against outdoor temperature fluctuations, preventing heat loss in winter and heat gain in summer. The recommended R-value varies by climate, typically ranging from R-30 to R-60 for attics.

Question 10

What are the signs of poor attic insulation?

Accepted Answer

Poor attic insulation can lead to several noticeable issues in your home. Signs of poor attic insulation include:

Uneven indoor temperatures.
High energy bills.
Cold drafts in winter or excessive heat in summer.
Ice dams forming on the roof.
Frequent HVAC system cycling.
Visible gaps or thin spots in insulation.
Presence of moisture or mold in the attic.
Pest infestations in the attic.
Cold walls, floors, or ceilings.
Difficulty maintaining a comfortable indoor climate.

These signs indicate the need for improved insulation to enhance energy efficiency and comfort.

Question 11

What types of insulation are best for attics?

Accepted Answer

Choosing the right type of insulation for your attic is essential for energy efficiency and comfort. Here are the best types of insulation for attics:

Fiberglass batts and rolls.
Blown-in cellulose.
Spray foam insulation.
Rigid foam boards.
Reflective or radiant barriers.

Each type offers different benefits, such as ease of installation, high R-values, moisture resistance, and air sealing properties. Selecting the appropriate insulation depends on your specific attic conditions, climate, and budget.

Question 12

How long does attic insulation last in desert conditions?

Accepted Answer

Attic insulation in desert conditions typically lasts between 15 to 20 years. Extreme temperatures and fluctuations can accelerate wear and reduce efficiency over time. Factors such as the type of insulation (e.g., fiberglass, cellulose, spray foam), installation quality, and exposure to pests or moisture also impact longevity.
